HiFU

The non-surgical lifting technique.

Sagging skin, neck wrinkles, and loss of firmness are among the most visible signs of aging. While traditional facelifts remain a surgical solution, a new generation of technology offers a non-invasive, painless, and more affordable alternative: HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound).

HIFU allows you to lift and firm the skin naturally, without surgery, injections, or chemicals, by stimulating your body’s own collagen and elastin regeneration processes.

What is HIFU?

HiFU stands for High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound. The treatment concentrates ultrasound energy deep within the dermis, the skin’s deeper layer, without damaging the epidermis.

This makes it a non-invasive aesthetic technology that leaves no scars or visible marks, while delivering results similar to those of a surgical lift.

Why choose HIFU?

Facial, neck, and décolleté firming

HiFU is ideal for men and women looking to tighten and lift the skin, particularly along the jawline, neck, and chin. It’s also effective for fine lines and wrinkles, and some professionals use it to lift the eyebrow area or improve under-eye firmness.

It’s most commonly recommended for clients over 30 who notice early signs of sagging or volume loss and want to redefine facial contours with a toned, youthful appearance.

Slimming and cellulite reduction

When used with a body applicator, such as the LipoHiFU Ultralift by Neocure, HiFU can also target stubborn fat deposits and improve skin texture. Clinical studies show a reduction in waist circumference of up to 4.6 cm after three months.

How does HIFU work?

HiFU delivers focused ultrasound energy to different layers of the skin and underlying tissue, reaching depths of 1.5 mm, 3 mm, or 4.5 mm, depending on the protocol.

At these focal points, the temperature temporarily rises above 47°C, creating tiny coagulation zones that trigger the body’s natural healing response. The surrounding tissue remains intact, helping to dissipate heat safely.

This process works on three levels:
  1. Mechanical effect: vibrations contract existing collagen fibers and stimulate fibroblasts to produce new collagen.
  2. Cavitation effect: sound waves cause micro-bubbles that break down fat cell membranes.
  3. Thermal effect: ultrasound energy transforms into heat, promoting adipocyte breakdown and skin tightening.

Is HiFU painful?

The sensation experienced varies -but most clients describe HiFU as non-painful but slightly uncomfortable, due to localized heat sensations. A localized warming sensation may occur, as the ultrasound energy generates heat beneath the skin. The practitioner can adjust the settings during the treatment if any discomfort becomes too intense. ensure maximum comfort throughout the session.

Possible side effects

Mild, temporary reactions may occur after treatment:

  • Slight redness or swelling in the treated area,
  • Tingling sensations,
  • Minor tenderness.

These effects typically subside within two to three days.

How does a HIFU session work?

The skin is first cleansed, and the treatment areas are outlined with a pencil. Restricted zones must be clearly marked to avoid them, such as the jawline, Adam’s apple, navel, and the maxillary and temporal nerve areas.

The practitioner then adjusts the device settings and selects the appropriate treatment head. Ultrasound “shots” or “pulses” are then delivered (see photo). Depending on the client’s comfort level, the practitioner can modify the settings to make the session as pleasant as possible.

After the session, you can resume your normal activities right away. In general, no side effects are observed other than mild redness in the treated areas. There’s no need to worry: this is completely normal. The skin should simply be protected from the sun, and direct exposure should be avoided for about a week. Treatments such as laser or radiofrequency are not recommended within 15 days after the session.

Session duration:

The duration of the session depends on the area being treated.

  • Face: 20–45 minutes
  • Body: 60–90 minutes

⚠︎ Aftercare: Avoid direct sun exposure for one week and postpone laser or radiofrequency treatments for at least 15 days.

What results can you expect?

Skin tightening and lifting

The main advantage of HiFU is that it delivers visible results from the very first session, even immediately after treatment. The effects continue to improve progressively, reaching their full potential after about 12 weeks, as skin elasticity increases (1). The skin appears firmer and more toned, the facial contours become more defined, features are lifted, and fine lines on the neck and décolleté are visibly reduced.

Body contouring

In the case of abdominal fat treatment, studies have shown an average waist circumference reduction of around 4.6 cm after three months. On the body, results tend to appear a bit sooner, often within about four weeks after treatment. The skin becomes visibly firmer and more toned.

How many sessions are needed?

It is up to the aesthetic practitioner to determine how many sessions are necessary, depending on the skin’s condition and the results observed after the first treatment. In most cases, two to three sessions are required to achieve optimal, visible and long-lasting results. Maintenance sessions can then be performed less frequently, about two to three times per year.

How much does a HIFU session cost?

Prices vary depending on region and treatment area:

  • In Belgium: around €300 for the lower face, neck wrinkles, or double chin.
  • In Paris: prices can reach €900 for similar treatments.
  • A comparative listing site for European clinics shows a wide range of quoted HIFU prices, from about US$130 (~€120-€150) up to US$660 (~€600) for certain aesthetic zones.
  • A professional article on HIFU pricing outlines that cost is highly variable depending on treatment area, number of sessions, clinic reputation, device/technology used, practitioner experience, etc.
